‘Daredevil’ Season 2 Described as ‘Daredevil vs. Punisher’

 

Daredevil does not kill people. Punisher kills a lot of people. They are on opposite ends of the Marvel hero spectrum which will put them at odds next year on Netflix when season 2 of Daredevil launches with a few new key characters, including none other thank Frank Castle.
The exciting news broke earlier this month that Jon Bernthal had been cast as Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that his introduction would take place in Marvel TV’s successful foray into the digital streaming juggernaut known as Netflix.

 When Marvel and Netflix initially announced their agreement and partnership, it was outlined as four individual character shows that would lead to a team-up miniseries called The Defenders. The success of Daredevil, the first chapter of the Netflix experiment/expansion, changed things and now a second season for the “The Man Without Fear” is being fast-tracked alongside the other upcoming in-development origin stories.
This fall will see the debut of two more Defenders characters in Jessica Jones (where Luke Cage also has a major role), and next year Luke Cage is expected to get his own series, potentially followed up by Iron Fist which Marvel is already taking meetings with talent for. With that in mind, is there room for The Punisher to get his own series and could he be involved in The Defenders?

According to an insider of Nerdist, they have it on good authority that Daredevil season 2 showrunner Marco Ramirez, who’s partnering with Doug Petrie to take over the job from season 1’s Steven DeKnight, is referring to the next season as “Daredevil vs. The Punisher.”
There’s no surprise there given their different methods of dealing with crime, and there are several stories/miniseries from Marvel Comics where the two battle each other. But regardless of any descriptions labeling the next show as a headline battle between two fan-favorite characters, we all know there’s much more to it than that. After all, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Frank Castle’s primary objective still involves cleaning up the streets and dealing out justice, one way or another.
Expect more Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) and other criminals, alongside the introduction of two other key Marvel characters in Bullseye and Elektra, both of whom had some Easter Egg references in season 1. Elektra of course, was unofficially confirmed via leaked audition tapes that were quickly pulled offline, and Jason Statham almost signed on to play Bullseye before negotiations went sour.
Kingpin will likely be playing the criminal mastermind behind the scenes, up to no good, and Bullseye (who may have shown up masked in season one) will probably be performing assassinations on his behalf, forcing the other characters to work together. Elektra and Punisher form an interesting bond in the latest Marvel Comics iteration of the Thunderbolts antihero team, which just so happens to be a property several Marvel high-ups have expressed interest in (including Guardians of the Galaxy writer-director James Gunn). And wouldn’t you know it, William Hurt is returning next year in Captain America: Civil War as General Ross who becomes Red Hulk in the comics. The only limits on what Marvel can do with these characters is what they want to do with them.
