‘Suicide Squad': Jai Courtney Talks Set Leaks & Jared Leto’s Joker

Unlike Batman v Superman, however, the filming for Suicide Squad has been a lot less secretive, with a number of set photos already leaking out – including some recent ones featuring Will Smith’s Deadshot.
Suicide Squad will act as a vehicle for introducing a number of DC villains, including Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley. But that is far from all of the eclectic cast of Suicide Squad. Some of the other baddies in the film will be Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s Killer Croc and Jay Hernandez’s El Diablo. Unlike what you would probably assume from a movie featuring mostly villains as the center, Task Force X will be working under Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, a government agent responsible for overseeing the squad. While promoting his upcoming movie, Terminator Genisys, Jai Courtney spoke with MTV Movies about what it’s been like filming, what his approach to his character is, and if Jared Leto is utilizing method acting to bring The Joker to life as he has with previous roles.
First off, regarding why he took the role, Courtney claimed it was ultimately director David Ayer who convinced him. Previously, Courtney had said he would never do a comic book movie, but once Ayer offered him the role, there was no way he could refuse. As for all the set images, Courtney admitted that it’s been a little unusual, although he also reaffirmed that he is sworn to secrecy:
“Well, it’s always funny… Often you’ll go into a movie, usually like franchise stuff, where it’s like super protected and you’re signing all sorts of agreements and things to not reveal details. I guess they launched some images officially, like the week before we started because we knew we we’re going to get snapped up. Like, yeah, we can’t say anything about it, but fans now, and like bloggers and stuff, have a pretty fair idea of what’s going on.”

Courtney also talked about Jared Leto’s take on The Joker, saying he hasn’t talked with Leto about the role but it’s a cool sight to see him perform as the clown prince of crime:
“I don’t think any of us are naïve to the pressure he’s under. It’s not something I’ve talked about with him, but I’ve seen him working and it’s cool, man.”
Courtney went onto discuss whether or not Leto would be using method acting for the role, saying:
“Sort of. I don’t know how you measure that these days. I haven’t seen him, since we started working, out-of-character, let’s put it that way.”
Finally, Courtney also revealed that filming is scheduled to last for quite a while longer, saying they have “‘til the end of August, so we’ve got a while.”
It’s interesting to note that Leto seems to be taking his role as The Joker pretty seriously, comparable to how he’s approached past acting gigs. Previously, the actor had described the character as “nearly Shakespearean” and a “beautiful disaster of a character.” Whether or not that lends itself to a great performance remains to be seen, but at least Leto knows this role is no joke.
